Polished Deadbolt
No CommentsHow to maintain polished brass?
I have spent considerable time removing old brown and pitted lacquer from the handset and deadbolt on our front door and have now polished it with brasso and it looks great. Should I apply new lacquer now or just shine it up with brasso periodically? It is solid brass. I hesitate to apply lacquer again because it looks so bad when it goes dull and pitted and takes a lot of work to remove (I used 100% acetone). If it makes a difference, our front door faces north, gets very little or no sun in a southeastern state. Thanks!
It really depends on how much you use the door knob. If it is for decoration mostly, you can use a really light coat of petroleum jelly (Vaselline type product),apply it with a cotton rag and re-apply every week or two, make sure you cover all the nooks and cranies well.
Or if it is used regularly, you can use spray silicone, it won't color as badly or as fast as lacquer and it is easier to remove.
If you have the time and energy the best is to lightly Brasso it every couple of days. Good luck!Polished Deadbolts For Sale at Auction Prices

A high quality deadbolt is an essential component of any home security system. Many homeowners rely solely on a deadbolt to protect their home so choosing a high quality and durable deadbolt is important. Deadbolts are a locking mechanism that is installed separately from the doorknob and requires a key to unlock. Depending on where the deadbolt is being installed there are two main types to choose from: single or double cylinder.
A single cylinder deadbolt is unlocked using a key on one side and a thumb turn on the other side – this is most commonly used in homes. Multiple sets can be keyed the same so you can install deadbolts on front and back doors, garages and sheds and they can all be unlocked using a single key. This type of deadbolt is easy to unlock from the inside which is important if there is an emergency but can be vulnerable if a window is located near the door.
Double cylinder deadbolts require a key to unlock from either side – these are more common in businesses or warehouses. This provides added security but can make exiting a building more difficult and time consuming. Most deadbolts (single and double cylinder) are accompanied by a spring bolt lock on the doorknob itself. Spring bolt locks retract when force is applied to the knob.
Solid brass deadbolts are available in a variety of styles and finishes to complement your existing door hardware. The most popular finishes include Polished Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Nickel, Oil Rubbed Bronze and Antique Brass. Create a common theme by using the same finish on all your exterior door hardware and further enhance the look by using a common pattern such as Georgian Roped or Eastlake. Although a deadbolt is necessary for security there is no reason it cannot be a beautiful addition to your front door and reflect your personality.
LookInTheAttic & Company offers a wide variety of solid brass deadbolts in a variety of styles and finishes. They also offer free design assistance and help. When choosing a new deadbolt be sure to ask questions such as can these sets be keyed the same and does this deadbolt have a coordinating door knob? Deadbolts are a focal point of your front door so be sure to look for solid brass construction to ensure durability and strength over time.
