The "door ajar" chime will not stop. Is there a way to silence it?
My mechanic says it will be a costly rewiring job. I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Just unscrew the screws holding the sensor in place and clean it with some contact cleaner, etc. You could also just remove it and disconnect the wire and tie it off with some electrical tape.
I'm not sure which make/model car, but it's possible that the sensor and door light switch etc are all just the same device and need cleaning or replacement. Sometimes, due to their location in the car body, they are subject to accumulating lots of dust, etc.
If you go buy a book on your car you might be able to figure it out. But usually there is a switch that 'opens' or 'closes' when the door is closed (generally the switch is held in the 'open' position when the door is closed). When you open the door, the spring on the switch allows the contacts to close, thus completing the circuit for the door light, dome light, etc.
So if the door is closed but not latched securely, there may be an intermediate position that the switch reads that sends a message to the computer to display it on the dash and send the audible alert.
Go buy a Chilton's book or Haynes service book for your car for about $20 and look for the location of the door sensors. Once you find it, you can figure out how to disable or bypass each one until you know which sensor is malfunctioning (both of them or 4 of them will not malfunction at the same time). once you identify it, you can get a replacement part at an auto salvage yard, etc.
That's how I'd do it before getting it 'rewired'. That sounds like a load of crap.
