Is this shotgun safe to fire with modern ammunition?
It is a Model 121 - 20 gauge manufactued by Harrington and Richardson, Inc. (circa 1941 - 1942). I took it to the range today, and after firing a box of shells through it, a fellow shooter warned me that modern ammunition should not be used in older firearms. He said older guns were not built to withstand the pressures of modern ammunition and that its use could cause the gun to rupture. He added that it usually happened to guns with damascus steel barrels. I knew he was right about the damascus barrels, but I found it hard to believe that all old guns were dangerous to fire. The gun I have has a solid steel barrel, so could I still use it with modern ammunition. If not, could I load black powder shells and use them without consequence?
Your gun is less than half the age of the newest of the old Damascus barrels, and from a time when many of today's propellants were already on the market. You should restrict its use to lead shot and ball (no steel), but you shouldn't have any trouble with it shooting off its face, much less rupturing. I have an even older L.C. Smith that's a better gun than most made today.
