Can I add a lock to a patio door?
I have a sliding patio door that has no lock. There was never a lock on this door, so there is no hole for a replacement lock mechanism. How do I make this door lockable? It is the entrance to a walk-out basement apartment. The walls around the door are concrete, so no easy fix there.
To amend my original question, this is the only door, so it has to be accessable from the outside. I like both answers so far, but then we would have to crawl out a window....and I'm chubby!Some can have a lock added to the mechanism.
Try the 'redneck' version. Get a wooden dowel and lay it in the track. The door won't slide open when it hits the dowel.
Could be set to allow the door to be slightly ajar for ventilation or Fluffy while still being secure.
Hmmm... of course this only works when the apartment is occupied.

Okay. Take some measurements. You need the width of the window's frame (moving part) and the width of the door frame. Also, how far does the moving part slip into the door frame. Take this all down to your "helpful hardware man" and see what s/he says. Take pictures if you can.
Might be a gate or shed type hardware that will work.
You could also go to a window outlet (they usually sell sliding glass doors) and ask them about options. I doubt that you are the first person ever to have this problem. Maybe they know a 'cure'. Perhaps a mechanism like is used to lock glass display cases in retail stores.

A mortise lock provides ease of entry since the lever will open the door after the top locking mechanism is unlocked.
