Recently the thumb piece on house door wont retract. So I can't open door from outside.?

The lock is a Kwikset lockset with a thumbpiece. I recently took off the whole mechanism and there was a long narrow spring that look misplaced. I believe this may be compression spring but have no idea where this spring would go. Please help with any walkthrough or helpful hints, Thanks
